VIDA - Life Together in Topeka
Like earlier generations, Latino immigrants settle in our community in search of new lives and new opportunities. In partnership with Topeka’s Latino communities, VIDA responds to their needs in ways that strengthen community, facilitate integration, and create lasting relationships. Since 2006, we have taught over 900 students in our ESL classes, and provided for over 400 children in our homework center and nursery. There is currently NO COST to our students for their classes, and we would like to keep it that way!
Our programming includes:
-Three 1.5 hour English as a Second Language classes per week (beginners and intermediate), including conversational classes with English speaking volunteers
-Basic introduction to computers for adults, including learning about Internet searches and email
-Homework Center for elementary & middle school age children while their parents learn English
-Nutrition classes & community garden
-Art classes for children
-Interpreting and translation
-Job search, referral, and advocacy
-Citizenship classes
Mission Statement - The VIDA ministry is based on relationships with our Latino neighbors. In partnership with the Latino communities we seek to be sensitive and responsive to the issues they face. With guidance from the Holy Spirit, we will proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ in our ministry.
